About the book:

This novel received each the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1955. An allegorical story of World War I, set within the trenches in France and dealing ostensibly with a mutiny in a French regiment, it was initially thought of a pointy departure for Faulkner. Recently it has come to be acknowledged as one among his main works and an important a part of the Faulkner oeuvre. Faulkner himself fought within the conflict, and his descriptions of it “rise to magnificence,” in response to The New York Times, and embrace, in Malcolm Cowley’s phrases, “a few of the strongest scenes he ever conceived.”
