The island is Barren Shoal, a spit of land adjoining to the historic Barren Island. Most of the residents, although not all, are current immigrants. They battle with poverty, bigotry, and harmful work. The central characters problem this isolation so as to wrestle with the cultural and political dramas of The Great Depression, together with poverty, unions, fascism, refugees, and sexuality.
